Kansas Quail Hunting

2010 SHOULD BE ANOTHER BANNER UPLAND BIRD SEASON

Upland bird hunters who thought we had a good season last year should be pleased to know that the trend should continue in 2010. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has completed summer surveys, and the results, compiled in the Upland Bird Hunting Forecast, suggest that Kansas will have abundant upland birds for the second year in a row. Although some hunters have been concerned about a significant amount of federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land turned back to crop production, this apparently has not hurt bird production to date.

Kansas Quail Hunting Information

Coming off a season in which 70,000 Kansas quail hunters harvested 410,000 birds, quail hunters will see a substantial increase in numbers this year making for good hunting in many areas. Conditions have generally been favorable for quail production, whistle counts were up moderately in the spring, and the roadside survey indicated production in the northern half of the state increased 30 to 65 percent from last year (south-central and southeast regions remained unchanged from 2008, though some reports suggest good production in more local areas of these regions). Central Kansas has become the better quail hunting portion of the state in recent years; northeast Kansas looks to be much improved this year; and some counties on the eastern margin of the western third of the state have surprisingly good quail numbers, affording very good mixed-bag opportunities. Emphasis for quail habitat restoration has been high in southeast Kansas, particularly in Linn, Allen, Bourbon, Neosho, Crawford, and Cherokee Counties. * Season Dates: November 14 thru January 31, 2010 * Daily Bag / Possession Limits: 8 / 32
