LITTLE ROCK - During last week's monthly meeting, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission approved a $25,000 budget increase as part of the AGFC's cost-share of the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program. The AGFC is partnering with the Natural Resources Conservation Service to expand quail habitat focal area efforts. The additional money will also be used to create a new partnership with Southwestern Energy to expand habitat improvement efforts. AGFC quail program coordinator Steven Fowler said the money will cover 25 percent of quail habitat establishment costs in Conway, Faulkner and Van Buren counties. "The proposed 9,700-acre focal area is near Damascus. The NRCS will provide 50 percent cost-share through the WHIP and Southwestern Energy will cover the remaining 25 percent of the cost," Fowler explained. "Southwestern Energy has also agreed to plant all of its gas lines in the area with quail friendly plantings, such as native warm season grasses and forbs," he added. The AGFC had already earmarked $67,000 for the program in Fulton and Searcy counties. In other business, the Commission: *Heard a proposal from the Fisheries Division recommending crappie regulation changes on Lake Charles in Lawrence County. The proposal recommended removing the 10-inch minimum length limit on crappie. The commission will vote on the proposal at the December meeting. *Approved waterfowl rest area and duck season code revisions that affect waterfowl rest areas controlled by the AGFC, but not owned by the agency. The codes deal with the cancellation of hunting on waterfowl rest areas during the last three days of the waterfowl season.
