Hunters enjoy upswing in quail populations

Reports from hunters say 2008 is proving to be a good year to be a quail hunter. In fact, hunters are reporting better hunting than they have enjoyed in a long time.

After a mild summer with periodic, timely rainfall, biologists with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation are optimistic about the upcoming quail season, which opens Nov. 14, statewide.

2009 August Roadside Quail Survey Summary - Oct. 14, 2009
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has conducted annual roadside surveys in August and October since 1990 to index quail populations across Oklahoma. Currently, Department employees run 83, 20-mile routes in all counties except Oklahoma and Tulsa. Some larger counties like Beaver, Ellis, Le Flore, McCurtain, Osage, Pittsburg, Pushmataha, and Roger Mills have two routes. The survey provides an index of annual population fluctuations. Observers report the number of quail seen to provide an index of quail abundance (number seen/20 mile route) and reproductive success.

Quail survey results available now - Oct. 31, 2008
Results from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's October roadside quail counts are in, and although sportsmen and landowners have reported seeing more quail than they have in recent years, the survey still shows a decrease in quail numbers compared to last year and also compared to the long-term average. However, the survey does show an increase in late hatch young birds for the second year in a row.
